EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the grandeur of ancient Egypt. The image showcases the entire length of the awe-inspiring Temple of Karnak in Thebes, Egypt, as it stood in 1905. Underwood & Underwood, renowned for their stereoscopic photography, beautifully captured this massive structure that served as a religious sanctuary. Intriguingly, amidst the vastness of the temple complex stands a modest chapel dedicated to Amon. Built by kings from the twelfth dynasty around 2000BC, it was later expanded by conquerors from the eighteenth dynasty starting around 1580BC. This detail adds layers of history and significance to an already remarkable scene. The photograph not only highlights architectural marvels but also offers glimpses into daily life at that time. A native Egyptian can be seen standing on a fallen block, providing scale and perspective against this monumental backdrop. As we immerse ourselves in this monochrome masterpiece, we are transported to an era when gods were worshipped fervently and civilizations flourished along the banks of the Nile River. It is a testament to human ingenuity and devotion that such magnificent structures have withstood centuries of existence. Through this stunning visual journey titled "Egypt Through the Stereoscope". James H Breasted's accompanying text further enriches our understanding of this sacred site. This print serves as a reminder of Egypt's rich cultural heritage and its enduring impact on humanity throughout centuries past.
