EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in French history - the enlistment of volunteers into the National Guard during the Franco-Prussian war. Taken at Place du Pantheon, Paris, in 1870-1871, this image showcases the enthusiasm and patriotism of the men who stepped forward to defend their beloved city against Prussian forces. The photograph portrays a crowded scene outside a neo-classical building, possibly reflecting the determination and unity of the French people during this challenging time. The volunteers, predominantly male, stand proudly as they prepare to serve their country. Their expressions exude both determination and hope for victory. This historical event marked a turning point for France after suffering defeat at Sedan. Surrounded by Prussians on September 9th, 1871, Paris relied heavily on its citizen army - the National Guard - to protect its sovereignty. These brave individuals played an instrumental role not only in defending their city but also in overthrowing the government and establishing what became known as the Paris Commune. Preserved from a private collection, this monochrome print transports us back to 19th-century France with its evocative depiction of volunteerism and national pride amidst turmoil. It serves as a reminder of how ordinary citizens can rise up in times of crisis to safeguard their homeland's values and heritage.
