EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking oil painting depicts Engel Michielszon de Ruyter (1649-1683), the Vice Admiral of the Dutch Navy and the son of the renowned Dutch Admiral Michiel Adriaensz de Ruyter (1607-1676). The portrait was painted by Jan Lievens (1607-1674), a Dutch painter of the 17th century, who was known for his portraits and genre scenes. Engel de Ruyter is shown in full military regalia, wearing a red coat with gold trim and a white shirt, adorned with a golden collar. He is also wearing a tricorn hat with a feather and a sash around his waist. In his left hand, he holds a sword, symbolizing his military rank and authority. In his right hand, he holds a leash, leading a small dog, possibly a Spaniel, which adds a touch of warmth and humanity to the portrait. The painting reflects the fashion of the Dutch Golden Age, with its emphasis on grandeur and military might. Engel de Ruyter's apparel is reminiscent of the uniforms worn by Dutch naval commanders during the Anglo-Dutch Wars and the Franco-Dutch War. The use of rich colors and the meticulous attention to detail in the painting demonstrate the artistic skill of Jan Lievens. Engel de Ruyter's father, Michiel Adriaensz de Ruyter, was a legendary naval commander who played a crucial role in the Dutch victory in the Second Anglo-Dutch War. Engel followed in his father's footsteps, becoming a successful naval commander himself and serving as Lieutenant Admiral of the Dutch Navy. This portrait of Engel de Ruyter is a testament to his military heritage and the artistic talent of Jan Lievens.
