Encampment of the Grenadier Guards, at Constantinople - from a daguerreotype by J. Robertson, 1854. Scene from the Crimean War: British soldiers in Turkey. The Sketch portrays some officers of the Grenadiers Guards listening to one of those interminable tales, related by a professional story-teller who has managed to find his way within the boundaries of the camp. The presence of these gentlemen is more to be attributed to a laudable desire of benefiting themselves by their recitations, than from hope of affording any extensive amount of gratification to their listeners. The scene is taken in the vicinity of Constantinople, and the rows of dark cypress trees rising in the background, announce their proximity to the final resting-places of the "true believers [Muslim graveyard]". From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative daguerreotype, captured by J. Robertson in 1854, presents an encampment of the Grenadier Guards during the Crimean War, specifically in the vicinity of Constantinople, now Istanbul, Turkey. The scene unfolds with officers of the Grenadier Guards gathered around a camping stool, intently listening to a professional storyteller regale them with one of his tales. Their rapt attention is more a result of the hope of personal gain through the officers' patronage, rather than for the entertainment of the listeners. The backdrop of the image is marked by rows of dark cypress trees, a clear indication of the proximity to the Muslim graveyards. The Grenadier Guards, dressed in their iconic bearskin hats and red coats, are seen seated on camping stools, their tents pitched nearby. This image, published in the Illustrated London News in 1854, offers a glimpse into the daily life of the British military during the Crimean War, revealing the human element amidst the larger conflict.
