EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic Eiffel Tower elevator, built in 1889 by Otis Elevator Company. The image showcases one leg of the tower, revealing the intricate elevator system that made this architectural marvel possible. Designed by French civil engineer Gustave Eiffel, the tower was constructed from iron and stood as the tallest building in the world until 1930. The photograph highlights various components of the elevator system, including a hydraulic cylinder, traveling multiplying pulleys, stationary multiplying pulleys, a landing platform, ascending car, and cables. This innovative design revolutionized transportation technology during the late 19th century. The Eiffel Tower itself was erected to commemorate the centenary of the French Revolution and became an enduring symbol of France's rich history. American inventor Elisha Graves Otis played a crucial role in making safe elevators possible with his groundbreaking demonstration at an American Institute Fair in New York in 1854. His success led to founding Otis Elevator Company. This wood engraving transports us back to Paris in 1889 when this engineering feat captivated visitors from around the world at an international exhibition held there. The print serves as a testament to human ingenuity and collaboration between nations during this transformative era of technological advancement.
