Edward of Woodstock, Prince of Wales, with his wife, Joan, Princess of Wales, c1850

Edward of Woodstock, Prince of Wales, with his wife, Joan, Countess of Kent, c1850. Edward (1330-1376), popularly known as the Black Prince, was the eldest son of King Edward III of England and Philippa of Hainault, and father to King Richard II of England. Edward, an exceptional military leader and popular during his life, died one year before his father and so never ruled as king (becoming the first English Prince of Wales to suffer that fate). The throne passed instead to his son Richard, a minor, upon the death of Edward III. His wife, Joan, (1328-1385) is known to history as The Fair Maid of Kent. From Pictures of English History, published by George Routledge & Sons (London and New York, c1850)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Edward of Woodstock, Prince of Wales, and his beloved wife, Joan, Princess of Wales. The image captures the couple in the 14th century, exuding regal elegance and timeless love. Edward, also known as the Black Prince due to his black armor, was a remarkable military leader who earned great popularity during his lifetime. Unfortunately, he passed away before ascending to the throne as king. His son Richard II succeeded him at a young age. Joan is famously remembered as The Fair Maid of Kent and her beauty radiates from this portrait. Together with Edward, they epitomize power and grace within English history. This color print from the 19th century adds vibrancy to their story. The image evokes a sense of melancholy when considering that Edward never had the chance to rule England himself. However, it also symbolizes enduring love between two noble souls amidst turbulent times. Displayed against a red backdrop representing passion and intensity, this photograph invites us into an era where royalty reigned supreme. It serves as a reminder of their significant role in shaping medieval England's destiny. Preserved by George Routledge & Sons in London and New York around 1850s for "Pictures of English History" this historical artifact transports us back centuries while honoring these influential figures from Britain's past.
