EDITORS COMMENTS
In this 19th-century print by James William Edmund Doyle, titled "Edward vows that he will make peace, 1360" we witness a pivotal moment in history during the Hundred Years War. King Edward III of England, portrayed with great intensity and determination, kneels on a battlefield amidst a raging thunderstorm. Rejecting previous offers for peace, he sees the storm as an ominous sign and makes a solemn vow to no longer be an obstacle to achieving harmony. The artist skillfully captures the essence of this significant event through his attention to detail. The darkened night sky is illuminated by flashes of lightning that pierce through the clouds, casting an eerie glow on Edward's figure. Clad in regal brown attire and draped in a cloak symbolizing his authority, the king's resolute expression reflects his unwavering commitment towards ending the war. This powerful image serves as a reminder of the complexities and sacrifices made during times of conflict. It highlights Edward III's profound realization that peace should prevail over personal ambitions or national pride. Just three weeks after this fateful moment captured in Doyle's print, the Treaty of Bretigny was signed on May 8th, 1360 – marking a significant step towards resolving one of Europe's longest wars. Through its historical significance and artistic brilliance, "Edward vows that he will make peace" invites us to reflect upon our own roles in promoting unity and understanding amid turbulent times.
