EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic moment of "The Eclair steamer and 'The Lazarette' off Motherbank, 1845". The image showcases the majestic vessel, L Eclair, as it sailed from Devonport with a crew of 146 officers and men bound for the coast of Africa. However, their journey was plagued by tragedy as they encountered the devastating common coast fever. As depicted in this photograph, after four days sailing from Sierra Leone, one crew member succumbed to fever and black vomit - an alarming occurrence that marked the beginning of a grim chapter. Soon after, eighteen more individuals were afflicted with the same illness accompanied by black vomit. Despite efforts to contain it on board, the disease rapidly spread among both sick and healthy sailors. In a desperate attempt to halt its progression, permission was sought from the Portuguese Governor to disembark all crew members for purification purposes. The ship underwent rigorous measures such as washing, whitewashing, and fumigation in hopes of eradicating this deadly menace. However, even ashore at Motherbank where they sought refuge during these troubled times, tragedy continued to strike relentlessly. Thirty-one brave souls lost their lives due to this merciless disease while under quarantine. Ebenezer Landells captured this poignant scene which serves as a reminder of both human resilience in face of adversity and our perpetual battle against infectious diseases throughout history.
