EDITORS COMMENTS
Dwelling at Valparaiso, Chile: A Glimpse into 19th Century Life This lithograph, titled "Dwelling at Valparaiso, Chile," is an intriguing snapshot of life in the 19th century. Created by a team of skilled artists and scientists, including Friedrich Heinrich Kittlitz, Victor Adam, Godefroy Engelmann, and Leon Jean-Baptiste Sabatier, this image is one of 65 lithographs that were published after the historic round-the-world voyage of the Russian corvette Seniavin. Commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and led by Captain Fedor Litke, this expedition set sail from Kronstadt, Russia, in 1826 and traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. The voyage was part of a series of scientific naval surveys carried out by Russia in the first half of the 19th century. In this lithograph, we see a Chilean dwelling nestled amidst a rugged landscape. The image showcases a family arriving on horseback, dressed in the fashion of the time. The local people, wearing colorful clothing and indigenous apparel, are shown interacting with their animals, adding to the vibrant scene. The artists, who were part of the French publishing house Freres Thierry, captured the essence of the frontier spirit and the rich cultural diversity of the places they visited. The image, with its intricate details and textures, offers a glimpse into the past and serves as a testament to the exploratory spirit and the artistic heritage of the time.
