EDITORS COMMENTS
Dwelling, Luzon Island, Philippines, 19th Century: A Glimpse into Indigenous Life during the Russian Expedition of the Corvette Seniavin This black and white lithograph, titled "Dwelling, Luzon Island, Philippines," is an intriguing window into the past, showcasing a peaceful scene of daily life in the 19th century. The image was created by renowned German naturalist Friedrich Heinrich Kittlitz and French botanist Godefroy Engelmann during the Russian circumnavigation voyage of the corvette Seniavin. Commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I, the expedition, led by Captain Fedor Litke, embarked from Kronstadt, Russia, in 1826 and traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. The Seniavin's voyage was one of many scientific naval surveys carried out by Russia in the first part of the 19th century. In this image, we see a group of indigenous Filipino people gathered around a campfire outside their dwelling. The hut, with its thatched roof and simple wooden structure, represents the meeting of frontiers between European exploration and the local culture. The boys and girls, dressed in traditional attire, appear curious and engaged in various activities, while the adults cook and tend to the fire. The image, part of a collection of 65 lithographs published after the expedition, is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines and the encounters between European explorers and the indigenous peoples they encountered during their travels. This evocative piece, with its warm campfire and the welcoming atmosphere it conveys, invites us to reflect on the diverse and complex history of Asia and the encounters between different worlds.
