The Duke of Devonshire, c1891-1908. Artist: Russell & Sons
The Duke of Devonshire, c1891-1908. Spencer Compton Cavendish, (1833-1908) became leader of the Liberal opposition in 1875, and after Disraelis Conservative government fell in 1880 he was invited to form a government. Instead he opted to serve under Gladstones leadership, holding the offices of Secretary of State for India (1880-1882) then Secretary of State for War (1882-1885). His differences with Gladstone over Irish Home Rule compelled Cavendish to refuse to serve in his government in 1886 and become leader of the Liberal Unionists. He succeeded as Duke of Devonshire in 1891 and entered the House of Lords

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Duke of Devonshire, c1891-1908. This print captures the dignified presence of Spencer Compton Cavendish, the 8th Duke of Devonshire. With his distinguished beard and Victorian attire, he exudes an air of authority and statesmanship. Cavendish's political career was marked by significant achievements and notable decisions. Rising to become leader of the Liberal opposition in 1875, he later declined the opportunity to form a government after Disraeli's Conservative government fell in 1880. Instead, he chose to serve under Gladstone's leadership as Secretary of State for India (1880-1882) before taking on the role of Secretary of State for War (1882-1885). However, it was his differences with Gladstone over Irish Home Rule that led Cavendish to refuse serving in his government in 1886 and ultimately becoming leader of the Liberal Unionists. In 1891, he succeeded as Duke of Devonshire and entered the House of Lords. This remarkable photograph by Russell & Sons beautifully encapsulates not only Cavendish's political prominence but also his contribution to British governance during a transformative period in history. As one gazes upon this image, they are transported back to a time when men like Cavendish shaped nations through their dedication and unwavering commitment. A true embodiment of nobility and influence, this portrait serves as a testament to both Cavendish's legacy as well as Russell & Sons' artistic prowess.
