Dr Heinrich Barth, German geographer and explorer, (c1900)
Dr Heinrich Barth, German geographer and explorer, at Timbuktu, Mali, (c1900). Heinrich Barth (1821-1865) was a member of the expedition commanded by James Richardson, sent to penetrate the Sahara from the north in 1850. When Richardson died in Nigeria in 1851, Barth took command, and after extensive exploration returned to London in 1855. His scientific training and thoroughness meant that more was learned about the geography and peoples of the interior of north and west Africa from him than from any previous explorers of the region. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Dr Heinrich Barth, a renowned German geographer and explorer, during his expedition to Timbuktu, Mali around 1900. Dr Barth played a pivotal role in the exploration of North and West Africa during the 19th century. Originally part of an expedition led by James Richardson in 1850 to penetrate the Sahara from the north, he took command after Richardson's untimely death in Nigeria the following year. Dr Barth's scientific training and meticulous approach allowed him to gather invaluable knowledge about the geography and diverse peoples of this vast region. His extensive exploration efforts culminated in his return to London in 1855 with groundbreaking insights into previously uncharted territories. In this portrait, we see a distinguished-looking man with a prominent moustache and sideburns that reflect the fashion trends of his time. He stands confidently beside a camel, symbolizing both his resilience as an explorer traversing harsh desert landscapes and his deep connection with African cultures. The photograph also features Dutch advertising for Cibils meat extract, providing us with glimpses into early twentieth-century commercial practices. However, it is important to note that this caption does not endorse or mention any commercial use associated with Cibils or any other company. Overall, this image captures Dr Heinrich Barth's significant contributions as an intrepid adventurer who expanded our understanding of Africa's geographical features while fostering cultural exchange between nations.
