EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print from 1854 showcases two of the most celebrated horses in the history of Doncaster Races: "Knight of St. George," the victor of the St. Leger Stakes, and "Virago," the champion of the Doncaster Cup. The image, created by an unknown artist, captures the grandeur and excitement of the racing world during that era. At the close of the 1853 racing season, "Knight of St. George" became the property of Mr. Morris, who was renowned for his unwavering commitment to running his horses to win. The triumph of "Knight of St. George" in the St. Leger Stakes was met with thunderous applause, as Mr. Morris's honest and commendable approach to horse racing resonated with the racing community. This victory marked the third time an Irish horse had claimed the coveted title of the Great Saint Leger Stakes in recent years. On the other hand, "Virago," the property of Mr. Henry Padwick, whose racing pseudonym was Mr. Howard, had an equally impressive season. Bred by Mr. Jacques of Easby Hall, Yorkshire, "Virago" began her racing career by winning both the Suburban and Metropolitan Handicaps. Her victories brought substantial winnings to her owner and trainer, the esteemed John Day. The "Illustrated London News" reported on these events in 1854, immortalizing the achievements of these remarkable horses and their connections in the annals of racing history. This photograph print stands as a testament to the passion, competition, and triumph that defined horse racing during the mid-19th century.
