EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Dodo, a fascinating creature that once roamed the lands of Mauritius. The image takes us back to the 17th century when Portuguese sailors first laid eyes on this flightless bird in 1507. However, by 1681, the Dodo had become extinct due to a tragic combination of events. The engraving beautifully captures the essence of this unique species, with its plump body and distinctive beak. Its monochrome appearance adds a sense of nostalgia and mystery to the photograph, reminding us of an era long gone. The caption also highlights how human activities played a significant role in driving this magnificent bird towards extinction. Men hunted it for food while inadvertently introducing predators like rats into its habitat. Additionally, deforestation further contributed to its demise. This thought-provoking image serves as a reminder of our responsibility towards preserving biodiversity and protecting fragile ecosystems. It prompts us to reflect on the consequences our actions can have on other species sharing our planet. Through this historical photograph, we are transported back in time to witness one of nature's greatest losses - an extinct species that will forever remain only in memories and engravings like these.
