1. Title: "A Milestone in Education: William A. Yancey's Diploma from Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute, 1873" Caption: This historic diploma, awarded to William A. Yancey on June 12, 1873, marks a significant milestone in his educational journey and in the history of African American education in the United States. The diploma was issued by Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute, later known as Hampton University, which was founded in 1868 in Hampton, Virginia. Established by black and white leaders of the American Missionary Association, the institute was created to provide education to freedmen in the aftermath of the US Civil War. The diploma, created by an unknown artist under the supervision of Samuel Smith Kilburn, bears the signatures of the President of the Board of Trustees and the Principal. It certifies that Yancey completed a three-year course of instruction at the Institute and recommends him as qualified to teach a graded school. This document serves as a testament to Yancey's hard work and dedication, as well as to the importance of education in the lives of African Americans during the 19th century. Hampton Institute was one of the first Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the United States. Its legacy continues to inspire and educate generations of students, making it an essential part of American cultural heritage. This monochrome image of the diploma, held at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture at the New York Public Library, provides a glimpse into the rich history of African American education and achievement.
