The Defence of Lathom House, 1644. Artist: J Godfrey

The Defence of Lathom House, 1644. Lathom House in Lancashire was the home of the Earls of Derby. In 1644, during the Civil War, the Parliamentarian General Sir Thomas Fairfax demanded the surrender of the house. James, 7th Earl of Stanley was away recruiting troops to the Royalist cause on the Isle of Man, leaving the defence of Lathom in the hands of his wife, Charlotte, and a garrison of 300, a tenth of the size of Fairfaxs army. Lathom withstood the siege for 3 months until, on 25th May, a Royalist force under Prince Rupert arrived to drive off the Parliamentarians. The house eventually did fall to them in December the following year

The Defence of Lathom House, 1644

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that depicts a significant moment in British history. The image showcases the stately home of Lathom House in Lancashire, which served as the residence for the powerful Earls of Derby during the turbulent years of the English Civil War. In 1644, when Parliamentarian General Sir Thomas Fairfax demanded the surrender of Lathom House, its owner James Stanley was away recruiting troops for the Royalist cause. Left with only a small garrison of 300 soldiers, Charlotte Stanley, Countess of Derby, bravely took charge and led an extraordinary three-month-long resistance against Fairfax's army – an impressive feat considering her forces were outnumbered ten to one. The print captures this heroic act of defiance and showcases Lady Derby as she fearlessly commands her men within the besieged walls. It symbolizes not only her courage but also represents the resilience and determination shown by all those who fought on behalf of their beliefs during this tumultuous period in British history. Finally, after months under siege, relief arrived on May 25th when Prince Rupert led a Royalist force to drive off Fairfax's troops. Although Lathom House eventually fell to Parliamentarians in December the following year, Lady Derby's valiant defense became legendary. This remarkable artwork by J Godfrey pays homage to both Lady Charlotte Stanley and all those who displayed unwavering heroism during one of England's most challenging times – reminding us that even against overwhelming odds, true strength can emerge from unexpected places.
