EDITORS COMMENTS
The ex-kaiser puts on a Tyrolean hat and a cape on his shoulders, accompanied by Captain von Ilsermann for his morning walk in the enclosed alleys of Amerongen Castle, 1918), depicts the former German Emperor Wilhelm II, also known as William II, making a leisurely stroll through the gardens of Amerongen Castle in the Netherlands. The image was published in the French magazine L'Illustration in 1924, as part of the album 'L'Album de la Guerre 1914-1919' (The Album of the War 1914-1919). The photograph captures a poignant moment in history, as Wilhelm II, who had abdicated the throne following Germany's defeat in World War I, was living in exile in the Netherlands. The image shows the emperor, dressed in a Tyrolean hat and a cape, accompanied by Captain von Ilsermann, one of his loyal officers, as they take a peaceful walk through the castle's enclosed gardens. The fortified walls of Amerongen Castle can be seen in the background, providing a sense of security and protection for the former monarch. The photograph is a testament to the historical significance of this period, as well as the personal story of Wilhelm II and his exile in the Netherlands. The image is also a reminder of the political upheaval and transformation that took place in Europe during the early 20th century, and the role that the Netherlands played in providing refuge for a deposed monarch.
