EDITORS COMMENTS
Carl Gustaf Hellqvist's painting, "The Death of Sten Sture the Younger on the Ice of Lake Mälaren," captures a pivotal moment in Swedish history. Painted in 1880, this oil on canvas work of art depicts the aftermath of the Battle of Brunkeberg, fought on November 14, 1409, between the Danish invaders and the Swedish forces led by Sten Sture the Younger. The scene unfolds on the icy surface of Lake Mälaren, with the wounded Sten Sture, dressed in aristocratic attire, lying on a sleigh pulled by two horses. The nobleman's face is etched with determination and pain as he gazes toward the horizon, while his men, also wounded, huddle around him for protection. In the background, a wintry landscape blankets the land, with trees and buildings barely visible through the mist. The stark contrast between the vibrant reds and blues of the wounded men's clothing and the monochromatic, icy landscape adds depth and drama to the painting. The presence of a horse-drawn sleigh and the horses themselves underscores the importance of road transport during the era. Sten Sture the Younger, or Sten Svantesson Sture, was a regent and a prominent figure in Swedish history. His death marked the end of the Kalmar Union, which had united Denmark, Norway, and Sweden under Danish rule. This painting, now housed at the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Sweden, is a testament to the rich artistic and historical heritage of the country.
