Death of Henry Percy (Harry Hotspur) at the Battle of Shrewsbury, 21 July 1403, (c1860)

Death of Henry Percy (Harry Hotspur) at the Battle of Shrewsbury, 21 July 1403, (c1860). Together with his uncle, Thomas Percy, Hotspur (1364-1403) led the most serious of a series of uprisings during the reign of Henry IV. When the rebels met the kings army at Shrewsbury, Henry emerged victorious, and Hotspur was killed. After rumours persisted that he was not in fact dead, Henry had his body disinterred, quartered and sent to the four corners of the realm

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the dramatic scene of the "Death of Henry Percy (Harry Hotspur) at the Battle of Shrewsbury" in 1403. Led by Harry Hotspur and his uncle, Thomas Percy, this uprising marked a significant challenge to King Henry IV's reign. However, their rebellion was met with defeat when they clashed with the king's army at Shrewsbury. In this image, we witness the aftermath of the battle as fallen soldiers lie scattered across the battlefield. The solemn figure of Harry Hotspur lies lifeless on the ground, his body disinterred and quartered as a brutal reminder of his failed rebellion. Rumors persist about his survival, but King Henry IV ensured that there would be no doubt about Hotspur's demise. The wood engraving beautifully depicts the chaos and violence that unfolded during this medieval conflict. Flags flutter in tatters while weapons such as swords and shields lay discarded amidst fallen warriors. This hauntingly evokes a sense of loss and sacrifice on both sides. As an important historical event from England's past, this print serves as a poignant reminder of how power struggles shaped nations throughout history. It is a testament to human resilience and determination in times of political unrest.
