EDITORS COMMENTS
Dans Peronne Saccagee: Les ruines du précieux hôtel de ville du XVI siècle et l'inscription que l'ennemi jugea plaisant d'y laisser: "Ne pas se facher: admirer seulement" (Peronne Devastated: The Ruins of the Precious Sixteenth-Century Town Hall and the Inscription the Enemy Judged Amusing to Leave: Do Not Get Angry: Only Admire) is a poignant photograph from the aftermath of the First World War. The image, taken in Peronne, Picardy, France, in 1917, captures the devastation wrought by the conflict on this once grand and beautiful town square. The town hall, a precious architectural relic from the sixteenth century, lies in ruins, its once ornate facade now reduced to rubble. The shell damage is evident, with debris scattered haphazardly about the square. In the foreground, a group of soldiers, likely British, stand amongst the ruins, taking in the destruction. Their expressions are solemn, a testament to the gravity of the scene before them. The inscription, left by the enemy, adds a layer of irony to the image. "Do Not Get Angry: Only Admire" seems to be a cruel jest, a reminder of the senseless destruction that war brings. Yet, the soldiers, and perhaps the photographer, seem to be heeding the advice, taking in the ruins with a sense of awe and reverence. This photograph, from L'Album de la Guerre 1914-1919, Volume 1 by L'Illustration, Paris, 1924, is a powerful reminder of the impact of war on communities and the enduring resilience of the human spirit in the face of devastation. The image invites us to reflect on the past and the importance of preserving history, even in the midst of destruction.
