Cyrus McCormicks reaping machine of 1831 (patented 1834), c1851

Cyrus McCormicks reaping machine of 1831 (patented 1834), c1851. This, the first widely adopted reaping machine, was shown at the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London where it was awarded a gold medal. Drawn by horses, the machine cut the corn and left it lying in swathes in the harvest field. The figure in the foreground is gathering the corn and tying it into sheaves which would be stood up in stooks, bottom right, to dry before being carried away and stored in stacks. Later models would include a mechanism to bind the corn in sheaves

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Cyrus McCormick's groundbreaking reaping machine of 1831, which was patented in 1834. Dating back to around 1851, this image captures the first widely adopted reaping machine that revolutionized agriculture. Displayed at the prestigious Great Exhibition of 1851 in London, it received a well-deserved gold medal for its innovative design. Drawn by horses, this remarkable machine efficiently cut down corn and neatly left it lying in swathes across the harvest field. In the foreground of the image, we see a figure diligently gathering the corn and skillfully tying it into sheaves. These sheaves would then be stood up in stooks at the bottom right corner to dry before being transported and stored in stacks. Later models of McCormick's invention even included a mechanism to bind the corn into sheaves automatically, further enhancing productivity on farms across America. This engraving beautifully captures not only an important moment in agricultural history but also highlights how technology and innovation can transform traditional farming methods. Cyrus McCormick's reaping machine played a pivotal role in shaping American agriculture during the 19th century. It symbolizes progress, ingenuity, and hard work as men like Cyrus Hall McCormick tirelessly worked towards improving farming practices for their countrymen. This print from Heritage Images is a testament to their dedication and serves as a reminder of how advancements in science and invention have propelled societies forward throughout history.
