Cricket Match upon the Goodwin Sands, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Cricket Match upon the Goodwin Sands, 1854. Evening game on the Kent coast. " The Goodwins, " which have been from time immemorial associated with peril and destruction, have just been the scene of exhilarating sport...After walking about a quarter of a mile, a place sufficiently high and dry was found; when the match commenced, and continued until nearly sunset...The Sands were intersected in every direction with narrow but deep gullies, or, as they are termed by the sailors, "swatches, " with swift running streams, into which it was dangerous to step. A sad association of ideas crowded the mind on looking over this awfully melancholy place. Here thousands of gallant fellows have been entombed - here millions of property have been engulfed; and here was a picture contrasting vividly with the present scene of pastime'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
Cricket Match upon the Goodwin Sands, 1854" is an intriguing and evocative photographic print that captures the contrast between the exhilaration of a cricket match and the melancholic history of the Goodwin Sands, a notorious area of the Kent coast known for its peril and destruction. The image, published in the Illustrated London News in 1854, depicts a group of cricketers engaged in a lively game on the sands, with the sun setting in the background. The Goodwins, as they are referred to, have long been associated with tragedy. Thousands of lives and millions of pounds worth of property have been lost to the treacherous sandbanks and swift running streams that crisscross the area. The print's caption notes that the match took place on a quarter of a mile of "sufficiently high and dry" ground, a rare find amidst the gullies and "swatches" of the sands. Despite the danger, the cricketers seem oblivious to the past and focus on the present moment, their hobby providing a welcome distraction from the somber associations of their surroundings. The print captures the beauty of the setting sun and the tranquility of the scene, with the cricketers' silhouettes standing out against the backdrop of the twilight sky. The print also serves as a reminder of the passage of time and the contrasting nature of human experience. While the Goodwin Sands have been a source of destruction and loss, they have also been the site of moments of joy and pastime. The print invites us to reflect on the complexities of human experience and the importance of finding pleasure in the present moment, even in the face of adversity. Overall, "Cricket Match upon the Goodwin Sands, 1854" is a captivating and thought-provoking image that invites us to appreciate the beauty and complexity of the world around us.
