EDITORS COMMENTS
Caption: "The Courtesan Komurasaki of the Tamaya Parading with Her Attendants, c. 1790". This woodblock print by Gokyo, created during Japan's Edo period in the late 18th century, offers a glimpse into the vibrant world of courtesans and their attendants. The diptych artwork portrays the esteemed courtesan Komurasaki from the renowned Tamaya brothel as she parades through bustling streets accompanied by her devoted servants. In this exquisite composition, we witness a harmonious blend of color and intricate details that bring to life the opulent attire worn by both men and women during this era. The right sheet of this oban diptych showcases Komurasaki herself, radiating grace and elegance in her resplendent kimono adorned with elaborate patterns. Her beauty is enhanced further by delicate accessories such as hairpins and an ornate headdress. As our eyes wander towards the left sheet, we are introduced to her loyal kamuro (child attendants), who play an essential role in supporting their mistress throughout her daily activities. These young girls are depicted diligently carrying out their duties while dressed in equally stunning garments. Gokyo's masterful use of block printing techniques allows for rich colors and fine lines that capture every nuance of this scene. This woodblock print not only serves as a visual delight but also provides valuable insights into Japanese society during the Tokugawa period. Displayed at Art Institute Chicago's
