The Cork, Blackrock, and Passage Railway, Dundanion, [County Cork, Ireland], 1850. Steam locomotive on a narrow gauge railway in County Cork, Ireland, which opened in 1850....the carriages...were placed on the rails, and sent up and down the line until three o'clock, when a full freight of the directors and shareholders - as many as could be accommodated on both engine and tender - were taken down in 17 minutes and brought back in 10½, performing the run up and down quite to the satisfaction of all, and without the least possible oscillation or disagreeable motion...At Stop Island, the rail for the first time crosses the high road and mouth of the Douglas Channel, previous to entering the deep cutting at Blackrock, and shows the Douglas Channel. After passing through the cutting, the line again joins the water, and comes out at Dundanion...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1850, showcases The Cork, Blackrock, and Passage Railway at Dundanion in County Cork, Ireland. The image captures a steam locomotive on a narrow gauge railway, marking an essential moment in the history of transportation in the region. The railway, which opened in 1850, was a significant innovation for its time, providing a faster and more efficient means of transporting goods and people. The scene depicted in the photograph is described in the Illustrated London News of 1850 as follows: "At three o'clock, the carriages were placed on the rails, and sent up and down the line until three o'clock, when a full freight of the directors and shareholders - as many as could be accommodated on both engine and tender - were taken down in 17 minutes and brought back in 10½, performing the run up and down quite to the satisfaction of all, and without the least possible oscillation or disagreeable motion..." The photograph offers a glimpse into the past, with the rail line crossing the high road and mouth of the Douglas Channel at Stop Island, and passing through the deep cutting at Blackrock before emerging at Dundanion. The railway's structure, including the bridge, is evident in the image, showcasing the ingenuity and engineering prowess of the era. The steam locomotive, a symbol of the Victorian age, stands as a testament to the spirit of innovation and progress that characterized the 19th century.
