Comet of 66 AD (Halley) over Jerusalem, 1666
Comet of 66 AD (Halley) over Jerusalem, 1666. The English astronomer, Edmond Halley (1656-1742) was the first to suggest that appearances of bright comets every 76 years were in fact sightings of the same comet. Halley predicted it would return in 1758. The comet duly reappeared as he had said it would, albeit long after his death, and is named in his honour. From Historia Universalis Omulum Cometarum by Lubenietski. (Amsterdam, 1666)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the historic moment when the Comet of 66 AD, also known as Halley's Comet, graced the skies above Jerusalem in 1666. The renowned English astronomer Edmond Halley, who first proposed that recurring bright comets were actually sightings of a single comet, predicted its return for 1758. Although he did not live to witness it himself, his prophecy came true. The engraving is taken from Historia Universalis Omulum Cometarum by Stanislaus de Lubienietski and offers a glimpse into this extraordinary natural phenomenon. The monochrome image beautifully captures the grandeur of the celestial event against the backdrop of ancient Jerusalem. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece of scientific history, we are reminded of Halley's groundbreaking contributions to astronomy. His discovery revolutionized our understanding of periodic comets and earned him lasting recognition through having this awe-inspiring celestial object named after him. This seventeenth-century print transports us back in time to an era where science and exploration were flourishing. It serves as a testament to human curiosity and our relentless pursuit of knowledge about the mysteries that lie beyond our world. With every viewing, this print invites us to marvel at both the beauty and significance of astronomical phenomena while honoring those visionary minds like Edmond Halley who paved the way for future discoveries in space exploration.
