Clouded Tigers, in the Zoological Society's Gardens, Regent's-Park, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Clouded Tigers, in the Zoological Society's Gardens, Regent's-Park, 1854. Big cats at London Zoo. The graceful species...is not only one of the most beautiful objects in the menagerie...but one of the rarest: the present specimens being the first which have ever reached Europe alive. They were captured in Assam [in India]...The Sumatra name for this animal is Ramau Dahan (Felis macroscelis Temm.), and Sir Stamford Raffles, we believe, gave it that of the Clouded Tiger. With the Tiger, however, it has no immediate relation; but really belongs to an interesting little group of Leopards, distinguished from the ordinary type by an immensely-developed tail, large shaded blotches of colouring...and generally lower stature, resulting from shortened and thicker legs'. [They are]...as docile as they are beautiful, playing affectionately with their keeper whenever he enters their den...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the elegance and rarity of the Clouded Tigers, on display at the Zoological Society's Gardens in Regent's Park, London, in 1854. The Clouded Tigers, also known as the Marbled Cats or Raman-dhana, were a fascinating addition to the European menagerie, as they were the first living specimens to reach Europe. These big cats were captured in Assam, India, and were not closely related to the Tiger but rather belonged to a unique group of leopards. The Clouded Tigers were distinguished by their large, shaded blotches of coloring, an immensely-developed tail, and a lower stature due to shorter and thicker legs. Contrary to their fearsome reputation, these cats were as docile as they were beautiful, often playing affectionately with their keepers whenever they entered their den. The graceful species, which is not only one of the most beautiful objects in the menagerie but one of the rarest, was a source of great fascination for the public. The Clouded Tigers were a true marvel, and their arrival in Europe marked an important moment in the study and understanding of the natural world. This photograph is a testament to the captivating allure of these magnificent creatures and the excitement they brought to the people of London over 160 years ago.
