EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Claude de Lorraine, the 1st Duke of Guise, a prominent figure in the 16th century. Painted by artist Petit in 1882-1884, this portrait depicts Claude as a distinguished soldier who fought valiantly in the Italian Wars. After being held captive by Emperor Charles V, he returned to France and was granted the title of Duke of Guise by King Francis I in 1528. The significance of this appointment cannot be understated, as it bestowed immense power upon the Guises. They claimed superiority over other noble families such as the Bourbon princes of Conde and Conti. The attire depicted in this print reflects the fashion trends of that era - with striped tights and an elaborate codpiece adding flair to his ensemble. Claude's regal stature is evident through his confident stance and royal headgear. The sword at his side symbolizes his role as a warrior during times of war. This engraving captures not only Claude's physical appearance but also provides insight into French history during this tumultuous period. Preserved within La France et les Francais a Travers les Siecles, Volume III edited by F Roy and published between 1882-1884, this print serves as a testament to both artistic skill and historical documentation. It offers viewers an opportunity to delve into sixteenth-century France while admiring Claude de Lorraine's commanding presence on canvas.
