Charles Mangin, French soldier, 1918

Charles Mangin, French soldier, 1918. Mangin was a general in the French Army during the First World War. Nicknamed the Butcher by his troops, he was a supporter of the strategy of General Robert Nivelle, which led to enormous casualties during the Nivelle Offensive of 1917 and the widespread mutinies that followed it. Removed from command, he was later recalled and commanded the 10th Army which played a vital role in stopping the German advance and launching the Allied counter-attack at the Second Battle of the Marne in July-August 1918. A photograph from Album de Photographies dans L Intimite de Personnages Illustres, 1855-1915, 8th album, Editions MD, Paris

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Charles Mangin, a prominent French soldier during the First World War. In this intense portrait, Mangin exudes an air of determination and resilience as he sits at a table adorned with maps and military paraphernalia. Dressed in his distinguished military uniform, he epitomizes the bravery and leadership that defined him on the battlefield. Known by his troops as "the Butcher". Mangin was a staunch supporter of General Robert Nivelle's strategy, which unfortunately resulted in devastating casualties during the Nivelle Offensive of 1917. The aftermath saw widespread mutinies among soldiers who had endured unimaginable hardships. Consequently, Mangin was relieved from command. However, fate would grant him another chance to prove himself when he was later recalled to lead the 10th Army. It was under his guidance that this formidable force played a crucial role in halting the German advance and launching the Allied counter-attack at the Second Battle of Marne in July-August 1918. This photograph not only immortalizes Mangin's significant contributions but also offers us a glimpse into his mindset during those tumultuous times. As we observe him studying maps and deep in thought, it becomes evident that behind every strategic decision lay countless lives hanging in balance. With its monochrome composition adding depth to its historical significance, this image serves as a poignant reminder of both the sacrifices made by soldiers like Charles Mangin and their pivotal role in shaping our world today.
