EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white image depicts Catherine of Alexandria, a renowned figure in Christian history and patron saint of scholars, unmarried women, and Europe. The exact date of this anonymous drawing is uncertain, with some scholars attributing it to the 4th century, while others suggest a 17th-century origin. The location of its creation is also unknown, with possibilities ranging from Egypt, where Catherine is believed to have lived and been martyred, to Italy or Rome. The drawing, executed in pen and gray ink wash in purple on paper, portrays Catherine as a regal and determined figure. She is shown seated on a throne, holding a palm leaf and a sword, symbols of martyrdom and victory, respectively. A wheel, another symbol of her martyrdom, is depicted behind her. Catherine of Alexandria is known for her intellectual prowess and her ability to convert Emperor Maxentius to Christianity through intellectual debate. When she refused to marry him, she was sentenced to death by the wheel, but miraculously, the wheel shattered upon touching her. This stunning pen and ink drawing is now housed in the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Sweden, a testament to the enduring legacy of Catherine of Alexandria and the rich artistic heritage of Europe. The drawing's intricate details and masterful use of contrasting shades of black and white bring Catherine's story to life, transporting us back to a time of faith, courage, and intellectual curiosity.
