The Castle of St. Elmo, Naples, 1857. Creator: Unknown
The Castle of St. Elmo, Naples, 1857. The Castle of St. Elmo, or St. Erasmo, stands on the most lofty point in the neighbourhood of the capital, and commands it completely with its guns. Some uncertainty attaches to the date of its construction, but probably it was built about the middle of the fourteenth century. The mountain on which it stands has been at various times called Monte Falerno, Santo Eramo, and Santo Martino; but St. Eramo has given its name to the castle. The Viceroy of Charles V. much enlarged it, and perhaps all that we now see belongs to the sixteenth century...At present Castel St. Elmo is well provided with munitions of war, and is in the hands of the Swiss, who are thus masters of the city...St. Elmo is used at times as a place of confinement for State prisoners, and of some of its prisons none speak without a shudder'. From "Illustrated London News", 1857

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Castle of St. Elmo, also known as Castel St. Elmo or Castello di Sant'Elmo, is a historic fortress located on the highest point in Naples, Italy. The exact date of its construction is uncertain, but it is believed to have been built around the middle of the fourteenth century. The mountain on which it stands has been referred to as Monte Falerno, Santo Eramo, and Santo Martino, but the castle has taken the name St. Elmo. In the sixteenth century, the Viceroy of Charles V expanded the castle, and what we see today may primarily date from that period. The Castle of St. Elmo offers a commanding view of the city and has been used as a fortification since its inception. It has been well-equipped with munitions of war and is currently in the hands of the Swiss guards. At various times, the castle has served as a place of confinement for state prisoners, and some of its prisons are infamous. The Castle of St. Elmo is a significant architectural feature of Naples and is a popular tourist destination. Its exterior is adorned with balconies, and the surrounding hills and mountains provide a beautiful backdrop. The castle's exterior is characterized by its fortifications, which include bunches of grapes and grapevines, reminiscent of the fertile land of Naples. This wood engraving, created in 1857, was published in the Illustrated London News, providing a glimpse into the history and beauty of the Castle of St. Elmo. The black and white image captures the essence of the castle, from its exterior features to the surrounding landscape. The Castle of St. Elmo remains an iconic symbol of Naples and a reminder of its rich history.
