EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts The Castle in Brussels, Belgium, adorned with grandeur on the occasion of the marriage of Emperor Joseph II and Princess Maria Isabella of Parma in 1760. The Grote Markt (Grand Place) in Brussels was transformed into a spectacular scene, with the impressive Erepoort (gate of honor) erected as the centerpiece. The elegant pavilion, designed by architect Josef Benedikt Anton Michael Adam, served as the backdrop for the royal event. The marriage was a significant union between the Habsburg and Lorraine-Parma families, with the young and beautiful Isabella, played by Isabella Maria Luisa Antonietta Ferdinanda Giuseppina of Bourbon, becoming the Empress Consort of the Holy Roman Empire. Tragically, Isabella succumbed to smallpox just three years later at the tender age of 21. This exquisite drawing by Ferdinandus Josephus de Rons (1737-1806) captures the essence of the grandeur and splendor of the occasion, offering a glimpse into the rich history and heritage of the Low Countries during the 18th century. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Netherlands, houses this precious piece of European art, preserving it for future generations to appreciate and learn from.
