EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a significant artifact from the mid-late 20th century - a case for a drafting tool kit used by renowned architect John S. Chase. As the first licensed African-American architect in Texas and the first African-American to serve on the U. S. Commission of Fine Arts, Chase left an indelible mark on American architecture. The black cover of this case, slightly stained with age, opens to reveal a gray interior. The center is imprinted with [Ridgway s], while [Made in Germany] can be seen on the upper spine, indicating its origin. Inside, there is a green fabric base with precise indents for each tool. Although some slots are empty now, eight separate tools still remain within this kit - compasses, lead, and even a ruling pen - testaments to Chase's meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail. This artifact not only represents Chase's personal drafting tools but also symbolizes his groundbreaking achievements as an African-American architect during an era marked by racial barriers and discrimination. Preserved at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), this case serves as both a testament to Chase's legacy and an important piece of cultural heritage that highlights diversity in architectural history. Through this print captured by L. L Ridgway Enterprises Inc. , we gain insight into John S. Chase's remarkable contributions to American architecture while celebrating his role as an influential figure in black history.
