Welsh cultural event: The Hall was decorated for the occasion with the flags from ships in the port...and an abundance of evergreens, chiefly laurel, were disposed in the room...On the central lamp-stem was placed a bunch of leeks, emblematical of the Principality, tastefully arranged. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print depicts the interior of The Cardiff Athenaeum during the Eisteddfod of 1850. The Welsh cultural event brought together an engaged audience, filled with anticipation as harpists prepared to compete for the Cardiff Town Prize. The hall was adorned with flags from ships in the port and an abundance of evergreens, primarily laurel, adding to the festive atmosphere. The central lamp-stem bore a bunch of leeks, symbolizing the Principality of Wales. In front of the judges, a large table was set, displaying various mechanical objects such as clocks and a model of a coal-shipping stage. The star attraction was the prize harp, an excellent specimen crafted by Mr. Bassett Jones, harp-maker to Her Majesty and the Prince of Wales. The harp, said to be a masterpiece of skill, occupied the right end of the table. The Eisteddfod, a traditional Welsh musical and literary competition, showcased the passion and dedication of the harpists and their audience. The event, held indoors, was a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Wales during the Victorian era. The photograph, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, captures the essence of this unique moment in history.
