EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the commanding presence of Captain Peter Strasser, the esteemed German airship fleet commander during World War I. Taken in 1933, this portrait showcases Strasser's authoritative stance and his naval uniform adorned with a cap that symbolizes his leadership role. Strasser's significant contribution to aviation history cannot be understated. As head of the German Navy's Zeppelin airships from 1916 to 1918, he directed numerous bombing campaigns starting in 1915. His strategic brilliance and unwavering dedication made him a formidable force on the battlefield. Tragically, Strasser met his untimely demise on August 5th, 1918 when his airship, Zeppelin L70, was shot down over the Norfolk coast. This event marked not only the loss of an exceptional leader but also highlighted the dangers faced by those involved in aerial warfare during World War I. The photograph is sourced from "Zeppelin-Weltfahrten" a publication that chronicles the journey of airships from their inception in 1899 until the voyages of LZ127 Graf Zeppelin in 1932. It serves as a poignant reminder of both Strasser's legacy and Germany's pivotal role in early aviation advancements. This historical image transports us back to an era defined by innovation and conflict—a time when men like Captain Peter Strasser played instrumental roles shaping military strategies amidst airborne battles.
