He called to the coachman to stop, (1907). Creator: Unknown
He called to the coachman to stop, (1907). The young Handel runs after his fathers carriage: Handel did not know then that no fewer than forty miles lay between his home and the ducal castle, but...running behind the closed carriage, he did his best to keep pace with it. The roads were long and muddy, and...the childs strength began at last to fail, and, fearing that he would be left behind, he called to the coachman to stop. At the sound of the boys voice his father thrust his head out of the window, and...a glance at the poor little bedraggled figure in the road, with its pleading face, melted the surgeons heart. They were at too great a distance from home to turn back, and so Handel was lifted into the carriage... From " Story-Lives of Great Musicians", by F.J. Rowbotham. [Wells Gardner, Darton & Co. Ltd, London, 1907]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "He called to the coachman to stop" (1907), captures a poignant moment in the life of the young Handel. In this scene, Handel is seen running behind his father's carriage, unaware of the vast distance that separates him from their destination - the ducal castle. Determined to keep up with his father, despite long and muddy roads, Handel's strength eventually begins to wane. Fearing he would be left behind, Handel musters all his courage and calls out to the coachman for a halt. At that very moment, his father leans out of the window upon hearing his son's plea. The sight of little Handel in such disarray tugs at his heartstrings. Although they are too far from home to turn back, compassion overcomes practicality as Handel is lifted into the carriage by his compassionate father. This touching anecdote showcases not only a tender bond between a father and son but also reveals glimpses of determination and resilience within young George Frideric Handel. The photograph serves as an illustration from "Story-Lives of Great Musicians" by F. J. Rowbotham (published in 1907). It offers us a glimpse into an extraordinary talent who would go on to become one of history's greatest composers.
