Buxton - The Crescent, New Baths, etc, 1854. Creator: Edmund Evans

Buxton - The Crescent, New Baths, etc, 1854. Derbyshire spa town:..one of the most celebrated watering-places in England for the cure of gout and rheumatism...The first great thing which the Devonshire family did for Buxton, and which has more than anything else contributed to its prosperity, was the erection of the Crescent - a piece of architecture which, for elegance and simplicity of structure, is unsurpassed...The Crescent was built by the late Duke, after a design by Mr. Carr, a well-known provincial architect, during the year 1789...This building is divided into one hotel (St. Anne's) and three boarding-houses (Dicklin's, Smiltor's, and Gregory's)...The Buxton waters have been analysed over and over again by different physicians, and with different results; and no one has yet found out the particular ingredient which is so beneficial to gouty and rheumatic persons'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Buxton, Derbyshire, 1854: A Scene of Relaxation and Healing at this Famous English Spa Town This photograph, taken in 1854 by renowned English photographer Edmund Evans, showcases the picturesque Buxton Crescent and New Baths in Derbyshire, a popular watering place in England known for its curative properties for gout and rheumatism. The town, nestled amidst the rolling hills and lush greenery, has long been celebrated for its therapeutic benefits, drawing visitors from far and wide. The first significant development for Buxton's prosperity was the construction of the Crescent, an architectural masterpiece designed by Mr. Carr, a well-known provincial architect, in 1789. This elegant structure, which divides into one hotel (St. Anne's) and three boarding-houses (Dicklin's, Smiltor's, and Gregory's), is a testament to the Duke of Devonshire's vision for the town. The Buxton waters have long been the subject of intrigue and analysis, with various physicians attempting to identify the specific ingredient responsible for their curative properties. However, no definitive answer has been found, adding to the allure and mystery of this enchanting spa town. The New Baths, visible in the background of the photograph, were added to the town's offerings in 1853, providing visitors with an additional means to immerse themselves in the therapeutic waters. The combination of the stunning architecture, natural beauty, and curative waters has made Buxton a cherished destination for those seeking relaxation and rejuvenation.
