Burford's Panorama of the Polar Regions - The "Investigator" Snow-Walled in for Winter, 1850. Sailors at Port Leopold, Canada, building an ice wall...constructed of blocks of snow...cut and shaped by cutlasses and shovels; they were cut of a size, so as to enable two men to lift and place them in a proper position...the point in the distance is North-east Cape and its beacon; the right-hand horizon glows with the splendour of an Aurora Borealis...[with] parties of the voyagers in the foreground, who are trapping white foxes...Mr. Burford's Panoramic Views are painted in the finest oil-colour and varnish...with wonderful power and intensity of effect, characteristic of the supernatural aspects of the Polar Regions...'. HMS Investigator was abandoned in 1853 after becoming trapped in pack ice, during the search for Sir John Franklin's ill-fated Northwest Passage expedition. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
Burford's Panorama of the Polar Regions: The Investigator Snow-Walled in for Winter, 1850," is a captivating oil-painted panorama by the skilled artist Smyth. This masterpiece transports us to the frigid and enigmatic Polar Regions, specifically to Port Leopold, Canada, during the ill-fated search for the Northwest Passage led by Sir John Franklin. The scene unfolds with sailors diligently constructing an ice wall, using blocks of snow cut and shaped with cutlasses and shovels. Their determined efforts are evident as they work together, two men at a time, to place each block in its proper position. In the distance, North-east Cape and its beacon stand proudly, while the right-hand horizon glows with the ethereal splendor of an Aurora Borealis. The foreground is populated with parties of the voyagers, who are not only building their defensive fortifications but also trapping white foxes for sustenance. Burford's Panoramic Views are renowned for their exquisite detail and lifelike representation, with a power and intensity that perfectly encapsulates the supernatural aspects of the Polar Regions. This panorama offers a glimpse into the harsh realities and heroic endeavors of those who dared to explore the uncharted territories of the polar world. The HMS Investigator, abandoned in 1853 after becoming trapped in pack ice, serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by these intrepid explorers. This work of art, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, invites us to marvel at the beauty and resilience of nature and the indomitable human spirit.
