EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning oil painting by the Venetian artist Francesco Guardi captures the grandeur and splendor of the Bucintoro Festival in Venice during the late 18th century. The Bucintoro was the Doge's state barge, a symbol of Venetian power and wealth, used only for the most important state occasions. In this painting, we see the barge adorned with golden decorations and rich fabrics, making its way through the Bacino di San Marco, the large basin in front of St. Mark's Square. The Doge, dressed in his ceremonial robes, stands at the front of the barge, surrounded by his nobles and gondoliers. The scene is filled with vibrant colors and intricate details, from the gondolas and gondoliers in the foreground to the buildings and flags lining the shore. The painting captures the essence of Venice's rich history and cultural heritage, as well as the religious significance of Ascension Day, which marked the end of the Lenten season and the beginning of summer. This masterpiece, now housed in the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen, Denmark, is a testament to the skill and artistry of Francesco Guardi and the beauty of Venice during the eighteenth century.
