A Bridge Over the Gniluiu River. Dvurechno-Durovskaya Railroad, 1906-1908. Creator: Dorozhno-Stroitel'nyi Otdel

A Bridge Over the Gniluiu River. Dvurechno-Durovskaya Railroad, 1906-1908. Photographs documenting various stages in the construction of dirt roads in the Tomsk region by workers and engineers of the road-building department of the Russian Resettlement Administration. The albums date from 1906-8 and 1909. The Russian state paid for the construction of roads such as those depicted in the albums in order to connect settlers with a railroad line, a navigable river, or commercial-industrial centers. The overall purpose of the road-building program was to promote the colonization of the taiga (moist coniferous forest regions) of Siberia. The albums show the construction of roads in the region between the main line of the Trans-Siberian Railroad and the Chet and Kandat Rivers in Tomsk gubernia (governorate). EDITORS COMMENTS
A Bridge Over the Gniluiu River: Documenting the Construction Process of a Railroad Bridge in Tomsk Region, Russia, 1906-1908 This photograph captures the construction of a bridge over the Gniluiu River for the Dvurechno-Durovskaya Railroad in the Tomsk region of Russia. The image is part of a collection of photographs documenting the various stages of road construction by the Dorozhno-Stroitel'nyi Otdel (Road-Building Department) of the Russian Resettlement Administration. The albums date from 1906-1908 and 1909. The Russian government funded the construction of roads such as this one to connect settlers with a railroad line, a navigable river, or commercial-industrial centers. The overall purpose of the road-building program was to promote the colonization of the taiga (moist coniferous forest regions) of Siberia. This photograph shows the construction of a bridge in the region between the main line of the Trans-Siberian Railroad and the Chet' and Kandat Rivers in Tomsk gubernia (governorate). The bridge, still under construction, spans the Gniluiu River with a wooden structure. The tree trunks and tree in the foreground add a natural touch to the image, while the men in the background are engaged in the arduous task of building the bridge. The unfinished bridge, with its wooden supports and tree-lined river bed, creates a striking contrast between the man-made structure and the untouched natural beauty of the region. This photograph is a testament to the meeting of frontiers, as the construction of the bridge brought the railroad and the settlers closer to the vast Siberian wilderness. The image is a valuable historical document, offering a glimpse into the past and the challenges faced by the workers and engineers who built the infrastructure necessary for the colonization of Siberia.
