Blessing of a House, 22 July, 1889. Creator: Unknown
Blessing of a House, 22 July, 1889. From a collection consisting of an album and individual photographs that document the Arctic voyage in 1889 of the clipper ship Razboinik (Pirate) and construction of the settlement of Novo-Mariinskii (present-day Anadyr') on the Bering Sea in northeastern Russia. The unique binding, date of acquisition, and inventory number of the album suggest that it belonged to the photograph collection of Emperor Nicholas II. The album contains photographs of the local Chukchi people and views of the harbor Petropavlovsk, the village of Nikol'skoe on Bering Island, and Novo-Mariinskii, where construction of the first building is shown. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts the blessing of a house in the remote settlement of Novo-Mariinskii, located on the Bering Sea in northeastern Russia, on July 22, 1889. The image is part of an album and individual photographs that document the Arctic voyage of the clipper ship Razboinik (Pirate) and the construction of the settlement. The unique binding, date of acquisition, and inventory number suggest that the album once belonged to Emperor Nicholas II. The photograph captures a significant moment in the lives of the settlers as they gather in front of the newly constructed house, seeking the blessings of their religious leaders. The men, dressed in traditional sailor suits and winter apparel, stand proudly, some holding flags or banners, while others bow their heads in reverence. The wooden houses in the background, with their distinctive architectural designs, add to the sense of isolation and frontier life in this remote location. The photograph is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Russia's Arctic regions and the meeting of different frontiers - the natural and the human. It also provides a glimpse into the daily life and religious practices of the settlers during this period. The image, with its timeless quality and intriguing backstory, is a valuable addition to any collection of historical photographs or Russian and Arctic studies.
