EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a magnificent Black Faced Ram, captured by the talented artist William Home Lizars in the mid-19th century. The Black-faced or Heath sheep depicted here was highly regarded for its hardiness, superior wool, and delectable meat. This breed thrived in mountainous regions spanning from Lancashire in the south to Fort William in Scotland. During this era, three prominent sheep fairs were dedicated to showcasing these remarkable animals: Stagshaw Bank in Northumberland, Brough in Westmorland, and Linton in Scotland. These gatherings provided an opportunity for farmers and breeders to exchange knowledge and trade their prized livestock. The engraving beautifully captures the essence of this black-faced ram's striking appearance against a backdrop of lush scenery. Its richly colored wool is testament to its quality as a valuable resource for textile production during that time. This image not only serves as a visual delight but also offers insight into the significance of agriculture and animal husbandry during the 19th century. It stands as a tribute to William Home Lizars' artistic skill and his collaboration with renowned naturalist William Jardine on their esteemed project - Naturalists Library. Preserved through time by Oxford Science Archive and Print Collector1, this historical print allows us to appreciate both the artistry involved and gain knowledge about our agricultural heritage without mentioning any commercial use associated with it.
