Black beaded dress designed by Zelda Wynn and worn by Ella Fitzgerald, late 1940s

Ella Jane Fitzgerald (1917-1996) was an African-American jazz singer, sometimes referred to as the First Lady of Song, Queen of Jazz, and Lady Ella. The dress is made from black synthetic crepe fabric that is hand beaded with black glass seed and bugle beads, and black sequins in a floral vine design. The bodice is short-sleeved and has a scoop neck in the front and a V-neck in the back. There is a metal zipper in the center back that goes to the hip, and a hook-and-eye at the top of the zipper. The gown has a princess cut waist, but there is no seam at the waist. The gown has a column skirt with a slit on the proper right side that is 24 1/2" high and contains a rounded hem. At the top of the slit, there is a pre-tied black velvet bow that is sewn to the dress

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning black beaded dress, meticulously designed by the talented Zelda Wynn and worn by the iconic Ella Fitzgerald in the late 1940s. Ella Jane Fitzgerald, known as the First Lady of Song and Queen of Jazz, was an African-American jazz singer who left an indelible mark on music history. Crafted from black synthetic crepe fabric, this exquisite gown is adorned with intricate hand-beaded details. The mesmerizing floral vine design features black glass seed and bugle beads, along with shimmering black sequins. The bodice boasts a modern scoop neck at the front and a graceful V-neck at the back. The dress exhibits exceptional craftsmanship with its metal zipper running down the center back to hip level, complemented by a delicate hook-and-eye closure at the top. Its princess cut waist enhances its elegant silhouette without any visible seam. A column skirt gracefully flows from the waistline and features a high slit on one side that reaches 24 1/2" in height. Atop this alluring detail rests a pre-tied black velvet bow securely sewn to the dress. This remarkable piece not only represents fashion excellence but also serves as a testament to African-American cultural heritage during that era. Preserved within Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), it stands as an educational artifact embodying both style and historical significance for generations to come.
