EDITORS COMMENTS
Bishop Lucius Henry Holsey (1852-1931) was an African-American bishop and educational fundraiser, born on a plantation in South Carolina where his mother was enslaved and his father was the owner. Holsey's early life was marked by hardship and adversity, but he went on to become a prominent figure in the African-American community. This photograph, taken in 1902, captures Holsey in his later years, with a distinguished beard and a serious expression. He is dressed in formal attire, wearing a dark suit and a white collar. The background is plain, with a simple wooden chair and a bookshelf visible in the room behind him. Holsey's life and work intersected with some of the most influential figures of the African-American experience in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was a close associate of Booker T. Washington, the renowned educator and leader of the Tuskegee Institute. Washington's philosophy of self-reliance and industrial education resonated with Holsey, who became a devoted advocate for the cause. Holsey also worked closely with Daniel C. Wallace, the founder of the J.L. Nichols Company, a successful publishing firm based in New York City. Wallace published Holsey's sermons and speeches, which were widely read within the African-American community. Holsey's writings emphasized the importance of education, hard work, and moral values, and he often spoke out against racial discrimination and injustice. This photograph is a testament to Holsey's enduring legacy as a religious and educational leader, and a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of African Americans in the United States. It is part of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture at the New York Public Library, a premier institution dedicated to preserving and promoting the history and culture of people of African descent.
