EDITORS COMMENTS
This breathtaking birdseye view captures the Prince Consort's Model Farm at Windsor as it appeared in 1862. The farm, established with the intention of benefiting the agricultural community, showcased the most advanced systems of breeding, rearing, housing, and tending all descriptions of livestock. The Prince's desire for distinct breeds and their peaceful rearing led to separate enclosures, ensuring a tranquil environment conducive to rapid fattening. The range behind the steward's house includes various structures such as the foreman's cottage, nag stable, hospital for sick stock, poultry department, blacksmith's and carpenters' shops, timber-yard, and sawpit. The barn, a marvel of innovation, is fitted with a steam-engine, thrashing-machine, oat, bean, and oilcake crushing-mills, flour-mill, chaff-cutters, elevators, and hoisting machinery. The waste steam from the engine is utilized for cooking roots and other foods for the cattle, making it a self-sufficient manufactory for converting farm produce into food for both man and livestock. Approximately two hundred sheep are annually fattened on the farm. They stand on sparred floors, allowing their droppings to pass into a vault beneath, which is carted away as manure when required. This efficient system ensured minimal disruption to the sheep and maintained their health and wellbeing. The Prince Consort's Model Farm was a testament to the advanced agricultural practices of its time and served as an inspiration for farmers across the country.
