Benedict Arnold viewing the destruction of New London, 1781 (c1880)

Benedict Arnold viewing the destruction of New London, 1781 (c1880). Arnold (1741-1801) fought for the American Continental Army from the outbreak of the War of Independence in 1775. He became one of its most effective generals, distinguishing himself at the Battle of Saratoga. He switched over to the side of the British in 1780 after becoming disillusioned at being passed over for promotion and at the alliance of the Americans with the French. In September 1781 forces under his command attacked and burned the port of New London, Connecticut. A print from Cassells History of the United States, by Edmund Ollier, Volume II, Cassell Petter and Galpin, London, c1880

EDITORS COMMENTS
Benedict Arnold, once a celebrated American general turned infamous traitor, gazes upon the devastating aftermath of his own destructive actions in New London, 1781. This haunting print captures a pivotal moment in history when betrayal and disillusionment shattered the unity of the American Continental Army. Arnold's military prowess had earned him admiration during the early years of the War of Independence. His strategic brilliance was showcased at the Battle of Saratoga, where he played a crucial role in securing victory for the Americans. However, resentment grew within him as he felt overlooked for promotions and disenchanted by America's alliance with France. In an act that would forever tarnish his name, Arnold switched sides to join forces with Britain in 1780. Leading British troops under his command, he orchestrated an attack on New London that left this Connecticut port city engulfed in flames and ruins. This poignant engraving from Cassells History of the United States serves as a stark reminder of Arnold's treachery and its devastating consequences. The black-and-white imagery accentuates both the physical destruction and moral decay caused by one man's betrayal. As we observe Benedict Arnold standing amidst chaos and ruin, we are reminded that even those who once fought valiantly for their country can succumb to personal grievances or misguided loyalties. This image stands as a testament to human frailty and serves as a cautionary tale about how individual choices can shape nations.
