Belgrade, (1919). Creator: Unknown
Belgrade, (1919). In Servian, the name signifies " White Town". The capital of Servia [Serbia] has undergone many vicissitudes of war and had been held variously by the Greeks, Hungarians, Bulgarians, Bosnians, and Servians, who sold it in 1426 to the Emperor Sigismund. It was stormed and retaken from the Turk in 1456 and suffered seven more sieges between 1522 and 1789. In 1862, after a wanton bombardment from the citadal, it was made the capital of Servia. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print of Belgrade, taken in 1919, transports us back to a time of great historical significance. The creator remains unknown, but their lens captured the essence of this resilient city perfectly. Belgrade, known as "White Town" in Serbian, has endured countless wars and conquests throughout its tumultuous past. From Greek and Hungarian rule to Bulgarian and Bosnian occupation, Belgrade's destiny changed hands multiple times. In 1426, it was even sold to Emperor Sigismund before being stormed and retaken from the Turks in 1456. This capital city suffered seven more sieges between 1522 and 1789. The photograph showcases the majestic Danube River flowing through Belgrade's heart while boats gracefully glide along its waters. It is a testament to the resilience of both the city and its people amidst constant turmoil. This image comes from "The History of the Great European War: Its Causes and Effects". Volume I by W. Stanley Macbean Knight published in London by Caxton Publishing Company Limited in 1919. As we gaze upon this monochrome landscape frozen in time, we are reminded of how war shapes nations but also reveals their strength. It serves as a poignant reminder that despite adversity, cities like Belgrade continue to stand tall against all odds.
