The Beaucousin Collection at the National Gallery - "Ariosto" by Titian, 1860. Creator: Unknown. The Beaucousin Collection at the National Gallery - "Ariosto" by Titian, 1860. Creator: Unknown

The Beaucousin Collection at the National Gallery - "Ariosto" by Titian, 1860. Engraving of a painting later attributed to Palma Vecchio and titled Portrait of a Poet, c1516. The most recent accession to our National Gallery, at least of those which have been exposed to public scrutiny, is the collection of thirty-one pictures purchased last year from M. Edmond Beaucousin, at Paris, for some £5000 or £6000, we do not recollect the exact amount. The portrait of "Ariosto" by Titian represents the poet-friend of the great painter, in a front view, in a thoughtful mood. He wears a low crimson dress, showing his neck and shirt, with a gold chain on his neck, and fur hanging over his shoulders. He holds a rosary in his hand, which rests on a book. The background is filled with a trophy of laurels. This the editor of the catalogue states is "apparently the portrait described by Ridolfi as then in the possession of Niccolo Renieri." It was transferred to canvas by Paul Kiewert at Paris in 1857'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Beaucousin Collection at the National Gallery: A New Masterpiece - "Ariosto" by Titian, 1860 The National Gallery's latest acquisition, acquired in 1859 from M. Edmond Beaucousin's collection in Paris, is a captivating addition to its esteemed collection. This acquisition, valued at around £5000 or £6000, comprises thirty-one exquisite pieces, one of which is the stunning portrait of the poet Ariosto, painted by the renowned Venetian master Titian in 1516. The portrait, titled "Ariosto," depicts the poet in a thoughtful and introspective mood. He is dressed in a low crimson robe, revealing his neck and shirt, adorned with a gold chain and fur over his shoulders. In his hand, he holds a rosary, resting on an open book. The background is filled with a trophy of laurels, symbolizing the poet's literary achievements. This portrait is believed to be the one described by Ridolfi, which was then in the possession of Niccolo Renieri. It was later transferred to canvas by Paul Kiewert in Paris in 1857. The engraving of this painting, which was made before the transfer, is shown above. Ariosto, a celebrated Italian poet, was a friend of Titian and a contemporary of the great painter's. This portrait is a testament to the deep friendship and mutual respect that existed between the two artists. The acquisition of the Beaucousin Collection has added significant value to the National Gallery's collection, providing a glimpse into the artistic and literary world of the Renaissance period. The portrait of Ariosto by Titian is a masterpiece that continues to inspire and captivate art lovers and scholars alike.
