Battle of Rivoli, 14 January, 1797, (19th century)

Battle of Rivoli, 14 January, 1797, (19th century). The battle occurred as Austrias General Alvintzy made his fourth and final attempt to relieve the siege of Mantua, which had trapped his colleague General Wurmser and 30, 000 of his men. Switching men and artillery from one crucial spot to the next, Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) was able to defeat the assaults in turn before unleashing a charge that swept away the tired Austrians. The next day the pursuit routed Alvintzy who, in two days of fighting, had lost 14, 000 men killed, wounded or captured. Bonaparte had lost 5000, but ensured the surrender of Mantua and the conquest of the important Po valley

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic Battle of Rivoli, which took place on 14 January 1797 during the late 18th century. The battle unfolded as General Alvintzy of Austria made his final attempt to relieve the siege of Mantua, where General Wurmser and his men were trapped. In a remarkable display of strategic brilliance, Napoleon Bonaparte led his troops in swiftly switching positions and artillery from one crucial spot to another, effectively thwarting each assault by the Austrians. As fatigue began to weigh heavily on their adversaries, Napoleon unleashed a powerful charge that swept away the tired Austrian forces. The following day witnessed a relentless pursuit that routed General Alvintzy's army.
