EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning illuminated manuscript page, created by the Master of Fauvel between 1314 and 1340, depicts the Battle of Nahr al-Kalb, which took place on August 29, 1100, during the Crusades. The scene unfolds on the banks of the Nahr al-Kalb (River of Dogs) in present-day Lebanon, where the Crusader army, led by Baldwin I of Edessa, Baldwin I of Jerusalem, Baldwin IX, and Baldwin of Boulogne, clashes with the Muslim forces led by Darald and Ilghazi. The Crusaders, dressed in their distinctive armor and wielding various weapons, charge towards the enemy, with the banner of the Cross of Lorraine leading the charge. Longinus, a legendary Crusader, is depicted on horseback, piercing the eye of a Muslim warrior with his lance. The Master of Fauvel masterfully employs gouache on parchment and intricate illumination to bring this pivotal moment in history to life. The manuscript from which this page is taken, "Li rommans de Godefroy de Buillon et de Salehadin," is now housed in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France and is a testament to the rich artistic and historical heritage of the Middle Ages.
