EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intensity and heroism of the Battle of Marengo, which took place on 13 June 1800. Painted by Francois Georgin, it depicts General Louis Desaix, a courageous French military leader who turned his divisions around upon hearing the cannons firing. With unwavering determination, Desaix marched his troops back to the field of Marengo and approached Napoleon Bonaparte. Despite losing the initial battle, Desaix's indomitable spirit led him to propose launching a counterattack against the Austrians. Supported closely by a wedge of cannon fire, his men fearlessly threw themselves at their enemies. Tragically, this valiant assault cost Desaix his life but ultimately secured victory for France as the Austrians broke and fled in defeat. The aftermath of this historic clash left behind a staggering number of casualties – 14,000 for the Austrians and 7,000 for the French. The image showcases not only soldiers engaged in fierce combat but also highlights elements such as horses galloping amidst billowing smoke from explosions. Francois Georgin's wood engraving skillfully portrays this pivotal moment in history with vivid colors that bring vibrancy to an otherwise somber scene. It serves as a testament to both General Louis Desaix's selfless sacrifice and Napoleon Bonaparte's strategic brilliance during one of many battles fought throughout Italy during the French Revolutionary Wars. This remarkable artwork transports viewers back to nineteenth-century Europe when war was waged with honor and valor on vast battlefields like Marengo.
